“So how’s Downstone’s doing?” Carmen understood, even though she hated that tone. “Well… we’ll do better at Christmas,” she replied, and both of them desperately tried to believe it. Carmen hung up the phone without giving a satisfactory answer about Christmas – or rather, without making a definite commitment, since she was fully aware that her mother would do as she pleased and include her anyway. Of course, nothing new would come of it, and on the twenty-fourth she would indeed end up either at Sofia’s new house – she was sure they would give her the worst bed there – or under her old quilt with the picture of the Spice Girls, something that would make her feel worse than ever. She glanced around. Her best friend at the shop, Indra, had just come in and was curiously eyeing the flowery mug that belonged to their supervisor, Mrs. Mars, which was strictly forbidden for anyone else to use.
