The Sonata for Cello and Piano by Glinka was written between 1825 and 1828, but remained unfinished. In this edition, it has been completed by Vadim Borisovsky, who has also edited the cello part. The sections realized by the editor have been printed in a smaller font.

As Glinka himself noted, the Sonata for Cello is the most successful of his pre-Italian compositions. While it was primarily intended for domestic music performance (Glinka played both cello and piano), it includes, to use his own expression, "some quite clever counterpoint." Free from the Italian mannerisms that afflict some of his larger works, it has an immediacy and charm that make it a significant addition to the cello repertoire.
