Since its premiere in 1873, this work has held a significant place in the cello repertoire. It is, on one hand, a brief and enchanting composition and, on the other hand, equally important is its use in education during the early years of playing. Key elements include the articulation of the original theme and its various repetitions combined with lyrical passages that require legato playing.

The new scholarly-critical edition by Christine Baur is based on a thorough examination of all sources, including the later orchestral version by Saint-Saëns. The edition includes many alternative articulations for the soloist, noted as “ossia” above the cello solo line in this edition for cello and piano.
