Azulejos (meaning "small polished stone") are painted, glazed ceramic tiles dating back to the 13th century in Portugal, where they were used in buildings during the Gothic period. Today, these decorative tiles are prevalent in a variety of buildings, from monasteries, palaces, and restaurants to bars, railway stations, and family homes.

The design on the tiles is usually linked to the unique history of the building, while individual pieces often form an elaborate mosaic.

There are countless wonderful examples of these beautiful tiles throughout Portugal, many of which retain the original blue and white color scheme that was in vogue during the "Age of Discoveries" (15th century to the end of the 18th century). The São Bento railway station in Porto, the Buçaco Palace, and many stops in the Lisbon metro are among the most famous places known for the art of azulejo.

The design reproduced here originates from the traditional tiles that adorn the facades of various old houses in Porto.
