Description

"The Tempest" is a romantic drama that begins with a dreadful event and ends with a happy conclusion, offering the reader (audience) catharsis. The play starts with a wild storm, which is conjured by Prospero who lives on a strange island with his daughter Miranda. Prospero, Duke of Milan, has ended up exiled on this island due to his usurping brother. The island is a microcosm of human society.

Here we find key social relationships, such as those between leader and subjects, parent and child, master and servants, as well as the mysterious intertwining of the real with the fantastic. The fallen lord Prospero becomes a master once more. What costs him his throne is his passion for knowledge in general and specifically for arcane, secret, and inner knowledge.

But this very passion makes him a ruler of nature and the master of the good spirit Ariel. With Ariel’s help, he "directs" the initial storm, thereby bringing his enemies to his magical island. The theme of forgiveness is presented as the highest good and as the moral lesson of the entire drama. Its value arises from the element of surprise.

It emerges in the figure of Prospero, at the moment when he has all his enemies in his grasp and when we all expect the administration of justice; then the forgiving stance overturns the entire story, the parts of which now function as gradations for the revelation of a paradoxical and superior ethos.

As Prospero renounces his high Art, so too does Shakespeare, in a final act of public apology, declare his withdrawal from playwriting. But his allure had already captured the audiences of all time. (From the Introduction of the work)
