Also known as "Theotokos of Kazan" or "The Black Virgin of Kazan," it holds a prominent position in the Russian Orthodox Church.
Tradition states that the icon was a gift from the Patriarch of Constantinople Germanus II to the inhabitants of the city of Kazan in the 13th century, to have the consolation of the Mother of God, from the frequent raids of foreigners and non-believers.
However, the icon was stolen in 1904 and shortly afterwards it became known that it was destroyed.
The Russian Church interpreted the destruction of the icon as a bad omen and a source of calamities for Russia.
