The name of the Virgin Mary comes from the Compline hymn "Spotless, Undefiled, Pure...". In Orthodox iconography, the Amolyntos is also referred to as the Virgin of the Passion because Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding in their hands the symbols of the passion, namely the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge.
