Female gender dysphoria - severe discomfort with one's biological sex - was rare until a few years ago, affecting less than 0.01% of the population at an early age and mostly boys.

Today, groups of girls in universities and schools around the world are coming out as 'transgender'. These are girls who had never experienced discomfort with their biological gender until they heard a story or discovered the community of 'influencers'.

Innocent parents are faced with daughters who are influenced by YouTube stars and 'activist' teachers and psychologists, who promote life-changing transitions – including medically unnecessary double mastectomies and hormone therapies that can cause permanent infertility.

Abigail Shrier, a Wall Street Journal writer, has spoken with the girls, their anguished parents, the therapists and doctors who facilitate these transitions, as well as 'detransitioners' – young women who bitterly regret what they have done. The process of coming out as transgender enhances their social standing, but the early stages of transition are not easy to reverse.
