Description

“I’ve got you under my skin.” Direct, straightforward, absolutely honest and free from self-satisfaction, true and authentic alike, Joe Henderson's tenor builds on Cole Porter's well-known standard and speaks directly to me. Especially now. This special moment, at 7:19 PM on December 28, 2016. Now that I find myself looking squarely at the trace of jazz in my soul, feeling my body to identify “under the surface” the marks, the scars from the sweet wounds of this music that I have been listening to devotedly for 45 years. To reflect on why I hadn’t started listening to it earlier, to realize what the initial stirrings were, to wonder what the losses might have been if I hadn’t immersed myself in its universe.

Deeply experiential, penetrating, emotional, tender, and educative, Ari Georgiou's relationship with jazz and improvisational music has played a decisive role in shaping the directions he adopted in his various visual, photographic, writing, and even architectural endeavors. Through photographs and texts, the book Hic et Nunc / Hip ’n’ Funk / Jazz spans a long period, from the 1970s onwards, coinciding with the development of the jazz scene in Greece. At the same time, it aligns significant moments and personalities from the same era from America and France mainly, reviving the unique atmosphere that prevailed in those major jazz stages.

Iconic musicians like Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders in America, Michel Portal, Henri Texier, Daniel Humair in France, or Joe Henderson, Steve Lacy, Peter Kowald, Gunter Sommer with their presence in Greece, pass through its pages, alongside numerous other personalities, while examining the formation of the disruptive improvisational music scene in Greece, primarily represented by Sakis Papadimitriou, to whom this publication is dedicated.
