When the Metapolitefsi occurred, the Left found itself split, with different "directions." In the communist space, disagreements had begun to manifest very early on, but the great social explosion of the French May of 1968 brought the prospect of socialist revolution in developed capitalist countries back into the spotlight, while the "Prague Spring" that same year offered a similar prospect in the east.
The military intervention by Moscow proved once again to what extent the regime built by Stalin and solidified by his successors is incompatible with democratic socialism, that is, with real socialism. Thus, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) found itself deeply divided and split into two mutually hostile factions.
However, there was also EDA, the party created by Giannis Pasalidis, which from 1951 to 1967 became the vanguard of the entire Left and succeeded, in an atmosphere of persecution and oppression, to emerge as the official opposition in 1958. EDA housed all the tendencies of this ideological space.
When the Metapolitefsi came, the two communist parties – for different reasons – did everything to dissolve or absorb it. There were attempts at cooperation – at certain phases – among all sides, but they ended in sharp confrontations.
These "fraternal backstabbings" are recorded in the book at hand. The work may not be complete. However, it is a first historical sketch overall of the split and the fierce ideological "dueling" that erupted in the arena of the Left.
