The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest epic in the world, the earliest monument of world literature. Within this work, the reader will find –beyond the aesthetic pleasure of a brilliant example of the art of language– highly interesting information and cultural elements about the ancient peoples of Mesopotamia. They will be surprised to encounter literary motifs that can also be found in Homer, the Bible, and Greek folk songs.
The endeavor of the metrical rendering of the Epic of Gilgamesh by the esteemed translation poet Vasso Papacharalampsou, amidst the complete lack of relevant Greek literature and the consequent resorting to foreign texts, requires thorough research and in-depth study. The logical, semantic flow of the 2,700 verses –the majority (60%) of the epic has been preserved– demanded effort in navigating linguistically challenging paths to render the verses. She consciously "crafted" the verses with a difficult material, alternating between demotic and katharevousa with dialectical and idiomatic forms from Cyprus, Crete, and Pontus, simultaneously transforming forgotten words and using some medieval logotypes.
