Vanilla comes from the fruits of a type of orchid that undergoes special processing. It belongs to the "sacred quartet" of tropical fruits, commonly used along with sugar, coffee, and chocolate, and is ranked among the most expensive spices in the world.

Its name comes from the Spanish word “vainilla,” which means “little pod.” The most widely used variety is vanilla planifolia, which contains larger amounts of essential oil. The fruit develops about 5 years after flowering.
