Super Telephoto

Super telephoto lenses have optics that make things appear closer than they actually are, allowing for photography from a great distance. They are typically used for wildlife photography, sports events, and other subjects that cannot be approached by the photographer. Their focal length starts at 300mm for full frame, 180mm for crop frame, and 600mm for medium format.

Tele Zoom

Telephoto lenses with zoom capability and optics that allow photography from a distance.

Lenses with a focal length of 80-135mm on full frame, 50-75mm on crop frame, and 120-180mm on medium format are ideal for portrait photography as they allow for photography from a moderate distance and flatter the subject's features.

Greater focal lengths are used for wildlife photography, sports events, and generally any subjects where a large distance is required.

Lenses with variable optical (zoom) that remain equally bright (same maximum aperture value) throughout the entire focal distance range they offer. Usually significantly more expensive than their variable aperture counterparts.

Variable Aperture Zoom

Lenses with variable optics (zoom) that do not remain equally bright (different maximum aperture value) throughout the entire focal distance they offer. Usually significantly cheaper than their equivalent fixed aperture counterparts.

Full Frame

Photographic lenses designed for use on full frame sensor cameras. A full frame lens can also be used on a crop frame sensor camera, but with its focal length adjusted according to the corresponding crop factor.

For example, a full frame lens with a focal length of 50mm (standard) on a camera body with a crop factor of 1.6 will function with a perspective as if it were an 80mm lens (telephoto).

The reverse does not work as the optics of a crop frame lens are not sufficient to cover an entire full frame sensor, resulting in the edges of the frame being black (severe vignetting).
