This image is also known as The Virgin of Vladimir. It is a medieval Byzantine icon of the Virgin Hodegetria, which is considered the protector of Russia.
According to testimonies, it is painted by the Evangelist Luke and describes the feelings of maternal love and her concern for her child.
It dates back to the 12th century and was initially in Jerusalem until 450 AD, then moved to Constantinople for three centuries and has been permanently in Moscow since 1480.
