Description

Serifos, late 19th century. Perseas Konomos is killed while working in a gallery, and the ambitious Drakoulis, the right-hand man of Emil Grohman, the boss of the mines and the island, uses threats, punishments, and violence to deflect all accusations of inadequate safety measures.

The widow of Konomos, fearing that her son might one day seek revenge, will not reveal to him whom she considers responsible, and thus she will be unable to prevent him, as he grows up, from getting a job in the mines. There, inspired by the fiery rebel Konstantis Spera, he will try to awaken his compatriots and colleagues to finally demand their rights.

At the same time, he will meet the only girl on the island whom he shouldn’t even raise his eyes to. A strong love, against all the conventions of society, the place, and the era, will emerge on the iron island.

“I will go in now,” says the crisp voice. “Enough already with just putting our feet in the water like the old women. I’ve been swimming since I was a baby; the German lady taught me.” She bravely lifts her dress, revealing underwear that reaches to her knees, followed by her sculpted back. She shakes her head back and forth to free the garment that got stuck, a torrent of red hair spills out. She strides determinedly, wading in up to her thighs, turns to her friend, come on. She catches a glimpse of two immature pure white breasts, enough to get dizzy before she, with a spectacular dive, plunges into the water.

As soon as she hears the bell, she ties the scarf on her head, places stones on the windows to wedge the shutters, bolts the door, and steps out into the alley, making the sign of the cross. Before she climbs the steps to the Upper Square, she looks down the path that leads west; she looks to see if he is coming. But it is mid-spring and the day lingers idly, it is still early and he is late. Soon the sea will take on the color of thyme and become restless, like a woman in the hands of an experienced man, the houses will be painted rosy, the Castle and the peaks of the stone hills will become hazy. When the sun decides to sink into the waves, that will be enough for today, nature will settle down, will rest.

  • I liked it a lot, waiting for the sequel as well. The narrative flows and it is a plus that it refers to real events

  • A book with a distinct literary identity. Kontzoglou's writing is rich, precise, and captivating, with an underlying lyricism that does not seek to impress but touches deeply. Through sparse yet charged images, human stories, memories, and emotions emerge and linger. A book to be read slowly, thoughtfully – leaving behind a silence full of meaning.
