Madder was particularly useful in the past because a red dye is produced from its root, suitable for dyeing yarns. In Ampelakia, Larissa, the first agricultural cooperative was created in the 18th century, which dealt with dyeing yarns from madder, which conquered the European markets. The dye derived from madder has alizarin as its main component.
It is boiled in water and used for dyeing yarns and fabrics. Vinegar and salt are also used in the mixture because they help in fixing the dye.
