Mint belongs to the species Mentha viridis. It is a plant that came to Europe from the East. It is an excellent aromatic plant that resembles mint but differs in the color of its stem, which is green in mint and purple in spearmint.

Historical references: The ancient Greeks used to rub their table with mint before sitting down to eat and made myrrh from it. Dioscorides, Hippocrates, and Pliny often mentioned it as a plant with great medicinal value and an excellent seasoning. Dried mint leaves have been found in the pyramids of Egypt, dating back to 1000 B.C.

Today, mint leaves, whether fresh or dried, are used in cooking, in the pharmaceutical industry as a flavoring and scent enhancer, in various medicinal preparations, and in the fragrance industry for perfuming soaps and making perfumes. In Crete, it is called balm and is used in many desserts based on sweet cheese. Furthermore, it is a favorite brew for many during the winter as it has numerous beneficial and relaxing properties.

Beneficial properties: The leaves contain a high amount of vitamin C, while the essential oil contains carvone, a strong aromatic substance. Various studies have highlighted the benefits of mint for recovering from colds, either through the use of the brew or through inhalation methods in cases of nasal congestion and runny nose.
