Description

Not just the best photo book of one of the world's greatest—and most photographed—destinations, but, surprisingly (and rightly), a book one can live inside. Spina captures with his captivating photos the rich decorations, the lavish mosaics and frescoes, as well as the vibrant urban life. A visual feast. A visually striking, intimate photographic tour of the spaces of Pompeii, including many that have never before been seen by the public. Pompeii, one of the most remarkable and well-preserved sites of classical antiquity, is also one of the most visited architectural landmarks in the world. This rich volume takes readers on a tour of Pompeii through a series of visually compelling and original photographs by the Italian artist Luigi Spina. Produced in collaboration with the archaeological park of Pompeii, it guides readers through the nine districts of the Roman city, including many hidden corners that are inaccessible to most visitors. The architecture of Pompeii is a central feature of the images, which have been taken at all times of the day, in all seasons, and in natural light. The pillared colonnades and rows of column fragments give way to intimate, atmospheric interiors. The mosaic floors and beautiful—albeit fragmentary—frescoes are reproduced with stunning fidelity and sensitivity. The book also includes an essay by Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, and several reflections on the history, architecture, and natural beauty of the city. "Inside Pompeii" provides the wonderful experience of touring this remarkable place without having to leave home.
