Description & Specifications

The "search for meaning" has devolved into a commodity in the hands of psychotherapists and "coaches." Once it was the domain of theologians, who sought the hand of God in History.

Between the Enlightenment (18th century) and World War I (early 20th century), theology gave way to politics: in the West of "disenchantment" (Max Weber) and the withdrawal of God, meaning was sought in "secular religions" (Raymond Aron), communism, fascism, and Nazism, as well as in liberalism and its variations (hyper-, neo-...), but also, increasingly seemingly, in conspiracy theories, since the "grand narratives" (Jean-François Lyotard) have been left orphaned.

The search for meaning is also a mania of the historian – when we talk about the meaning of the actions taken by the actors of an era, for expressions of a "worldview" that characterizes a time, a place, a human group (class, race, nation, or police unit, body of public servants, religious order), sometimes legitimizing and justifying the worst.

This book, an introduction to the history of the 20th and 21st centuries, presents the "narratives of time" (François Hartog) that give meaning, substance, and coherence to individuals determined to live and write history, and shows a way to historiograph by giving due attention to the mental universes and the good reasons we always invoke to create and to destroy.

For history, apart from being an academic discipline or science, is also an art of reading and experiencing time, a literature sensitive to both the heart and logic.
