Description

Phil Gioia grew up as a military child during the decades after World War II. Influenced by the military, he attended the Virginia Military Institute and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he completed Airborne School and Ranger School. A few months after his graduation, he arrived in Vietnam in the early stages of the Tet Offensive in 1968, where he took command of a company in the 82nd Airborne Division, leading his soldiers in fierce battles in the city of Hue. Danger was ever-present, with the discovery of mass graves adding to the weight of events. After being injured, he returned to the United States in May, but a year later he returned with the 1st Cavalry, this time leading a light infantry company. Traversing the jungles and rubber plantations along the Cambodian border, he sought to track down an enemy that preferred ambushes and night attacks over "conventional" battles. Danger Close! narrates the Vietnam War from a unique perspective, that of a young officer who served in two cross-branch operations. The narrative is filled with emotional intensity and vivid description, from the anguish of discovering slaughtered people to the horrors of night combat. Hard to put down and hard to forget, Danger Close! will remind readers of the best Vietnam memories, like Guns Up! and Baptism.
