On Sunday, June 10, 2018, tens of thousands of women with green, white, and purple scarves took to the streets of Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and London as part of PROCESSIONS, a mass artwork marking 100 years since women were first allowed to vote in the UK.

Produced by the artistic charity Artichoke and commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK's art program for the centenary of the First World War, PROCESSIONS was a moment of celebration and reflection on what it means to be a woman today.

In the months leading up to June 10, 100 artists were selected to collaborate with artistic and community organizations across the country to create banners: original artworks inspired by the banners made by suffragettes a century earlier.

These 21st-century banners are powerful statements in text and textiles, referencing early struggles for equality and reflecting contemporary concerns of women and those who identify as women.

"Women Making History" is the first opportunity to see each of these banners up close in all their brilliant detail and to witness a historic moment when a mass artwork was created by women in all their diversity and transformed the main streets of our four capitals.

With contributions from Dame Helen Pankhurst, June Sarpong, and Saoirse Monica Jackson, as well as many other collaborators, artists, and participants from across the country, this fully illustrated book shows how art can create and bring history to the forefront.
