Celebrating the centenary of Saul Leiter's birth, the official retrospective of a revolutionary in the photographic world of the twentieth century. Saul Leiter photographed and painted nearly every day for over sixty years, amassing a vast archive, much of which remained unseen during his lifetime. Finding inspiration in a few blocks around his apartment in Lower Manhattan, he was a master at discovering beauty in the most ordinary locations. Today, he is celebrated for his expressive color photographs of New York City in the 1950s and 1960s, which were unknown at the time, while also achieving success as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. During this period, he photographed black-and-white street scenes on his daily walks and showers, as well as intimate portraits at home, while continuing his artistic explorations with abstract watercolors, surreal notebooks, and painted photographs. Created in collaboration with the Saul Leiter Foundation, this definitive monographic volume gathers these diverse, yet interrelated, series of works—including many that have never been published—to reveal the full artist for the first time.
