Ground epimedium leaves (Epimedium brevicornum), also known as Horny Goat Weed, have been used in Asia for more than 2,000 years as a tonic, aphrodisiac and anti-rheumatic supplement. They are used to support energy and vitality.
To prepare an infusion, add 1 teaspoon, approximately 5 g, to 150–160 ml of freshly boiled water cooled to around 80–90 °C. Leave to steep for approximately 10 minutes, strain and serve, optionally with honey, milk or lemon. Up to 3 cups a day may be consumed for up to 3 weeks, followed by a 1-week break. Use may then be resumed the following month.
Possible side effects include respiratory problems, increased heart rate, excessive energy and sweating. Do not use if you are taking antihypertensive or anticoagulant medicines, have a cardiovascular condition, a hormone-sensitive cancer such as breast or ovarian cancer, or thyroid disease.
