Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe) is an evergreen tree native to West Africa, specifically Nigeria, Cameroon, and Congo. This plant has psychoactive properties and is widely known as a herbal aphrodisiac.
The bark of the tree contains active compounds called alkaloids, with the main alkaloid being yohimbine. Yohimbine is used as a medication to treat erectile dysfunction, and extracts from the tree's bark are sold as dietary supplements.
The action of yohimbine is related to the relaxation and dilation of blood vessels, which increases blood flow and erection. Additionally, its potential to stimulate areas of the brain associated with sexual desire is being investigated.
Moreover, yohimbine may facilitate lipolysis by releasing norepinephrine in fat cells and blocking alpha-2 receptors. As a supplement, the dried bark of the tree is used to make tea.
Preparation of the drink:
- 30 g of Yohimbe in ½ liter of water
- Place the plant in cold water and let it boil for 5-10 minutes
- Remove from heat, let sit for 5-10 minutes, and then strain
WARNING: Yohimbe may cause high blood pressure, increased heart rate, headaches, anxiety, dizziness, nausea, and insomnia if taken in large doses or for extended periods. It should be used with caution when taken with medications for high blood pressure or psychiatric drugs. People with kidney problems, those with psychiatric disorders, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use Yohimbe.
