RECENT RESEARCH ON THE RUINS AND CRITICAL APPROACH TO THE CURRENT BIBLIOGRAPHY
The Basilica B΄ at the archaeological site of Philippi dates back to the mid-sixth century AD and presents a puzzle in the chapter of the architectural history concerning the Justinian period of the Greek territory. This study seeks to clarify key issues of the divergent opinions that weigh upon the existing relevant literature and to enhance our knowledge of a series of ambiguous elements.
In this context, it is documented that the Basilica B΄ was never completed as a building and did not function as a church, aligning with the view of the excavator Paul Lemerle. At the same time, an attempt is made to determine the Architect's intentions regarding the design of the Basilica.
Finally, the timeline of its construction phases is clarified, and an effort is made to identify the identity of the Architect who undertook the design and construction of it.
