Description

For the past 25 years, information systems have had a significant impact on society and businesses. Until recently, however, the transportation of the majority of passengers and goods by sea was carried out much like it was in the early part of the previous century. In an effort to make shipping safer, more "green", more efficient, and transparent, advanced information technologies are being gradually introduced.

The emerging field of maritime informatics studies the application of information technology and information systems in maritime transportation. Maritime informatics can be viewed as a field of study as well as a field of application. As a field of application, it serves as an outlet for innovations stemming from data science and artificial intelligence, while as an area of study, it lies at the intersection of computer science and maritime engineering.

The goal of this book is to compile the material required for an undergraduate or graduate student to develop a fundamental understanding of maritime informatics, through an analytical approach via real examples and cases.

Contents:

  • Maritime reference systems
  • Processing maritime data in relational databases
  • Analysis of maritime data
  • Visual analysis of ship traffic
  • Real-time traffic monitoring on evolving maritime routes
  • Link discovery from heterogeneous sources of maritime data
  • Recognition of complex maritime events
  • Handling uncertainty for identifying deviations in maritime routes
  • Definition and analysis of maritime transport networks and ports from AIS data: Connectivity and spatial distribution
  • Maritime economic analysis
