Cardamom (or cardamom seed) is the dried fruit of a plant that belongs to the ginger family. It is one of the most expensive spices and has been known since ancient times as the plant that stimulates appetite, while it has a reputation for increasing sexual desire in men.
It has a distinctive flavor, with a strong aroma. It is cardiotonic, diuretic, and expectorant. Its most well-known property is that it enhances digestive function. Additionally, it is particularly beneficial for the liver.
It has a bitter and sweet taste, slightly lemony, and is very aromatic. It mainly accompanies salads as well as cooked vegetables.
In Arab countries, they add a little cardamom to coffee for better flavor, while in Africa, it is added to tea. It is one of the ingredients of curry powder. The seeds are also used whole in pickles and marinades.
We prefer cardamom in seed form because, in powder form, it quickly loses its aroma; we keep it in a well-sealed container and grind it just before cooking.
Consumption is prohibited during pregnancy.
