Cardamom (or cardamom seed) is the dried fruit of a plant that belongs to the ginger family. It is one of the most expensive spices and has a distinct flavor with a strong aroma.

The properties of cardamom include:

• Stimulating appetite
• Increased sexual drive in men
• Catalytic function of digestion
• Strengthening, cardiotonic, diuretic, and expectorant action
• Beneficial for the liver

Its flavor is bitter and sweet, slightly lemony, and very aromatic. It primarily accompanies salads and cooked vegetables. In Arab countries, it is added to coffee, while in Africa it is used in tea. It is one of the ingredients in curry powder, and the seeds are also used whole in pickles and marinades.

It is preferred in seed form, as in powder it quickly loses its aroma. It is recommended to be stored in a well-sealed container and ground just before cooking.

Consumption is prohibited during pregnancy.
