Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), also known as wild or four-leaved yam, is a climbing plant with a cylindrical stem, heart-shaped leaves, and white or green flowers. The root is used to prepare a decoction or infusion and contains substances similar to progesterone.
The herb is traditionally used for menstrual cramps, intestinal colic, labor pains, and arthritic or rheumatic pain. To make a decoction, boil one teaspoon in a cup of water and then strain. To make an infusion, add the herb to water that has been boiled and removed from the heat, cover and leave for 5 minutes, then strain. Avoid use during pregnancy.
