Its decongestant and vein-constricting effects are associated with its use for injuries, inflammatory swelling and problems caused by varicose veins.

A weak, cold decoction of the bark is used as an eye wash in cases of conjunctivitis. Witch hazel also helps control diarrhoea and may help with dysentery.
