What Is 925 Sterling Silver?
Silver is a heavy, rare, soft metal with a distinctive metallic shine.
The silver content of a piece of jewelry is usually measured in “fineness,” indicated by °. For example, 925° silver means 92.5 percent (925 parts) pure silver and 7.5 percent (75 parts) metal alloy.
Why don’t we use 100% silver in jewelry?
Pure silver is too soft for use in jewelry, decorative items, and other products, so we add other metals, usually copper, to make it suitable for jewelry. 925 fineness is the right standard to ensure your jewelry withstands wear and lasts over time.
All silver jewelry should be stamped with the “925” hallmark. This is usually found on the underside of a piece in very small numbers so it does not affect its appearance.
925 sterling silver does not cause allergies like other metals. If someone is allergic to 925 sterling silver, they are allergic to all metals and should wear jewelry made only of yellow or white gold.
Silver will tarnish over time. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about—it confirms that the piece is indeed made of silver. There are ways to slow this process (rhodium plating, gold plating, and care tips), and we can easily restore your jewelry to its original color.
