It is cultivated as a widely used vegetable in the highlands of the Andes, particularly in Peru, as it is rich in nutritional components.

In traditional Peruvian medicine, the dried root of maca is considered effective in treating sexual and reproductive dysfunctions, boosting the immune system, addressing anemia, cycle disorders, and menopause. Consuming maca is believed to effectively address erectile dysfunction, increase libido (in both men and women), and improve the quantity and quality of sperm.

The nutritional value of dried maca root is high, containing:

  • 60-75% carbohydrates
  • 10-14% protein
  • 8.5% fiber
  • 2.2% lipids

Maca also contains sterols, vitamins (B1, B2, B12, C, and E), inorganic salts, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins. It is rich in trace minerals such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, selenium, and iron.
