These books aim to provide an authentic musical record of an invaluable cultural heritage: Smyrniote song. They contain songs from Smyrna, the coasts of Asia Minor, Istanbul, as well as the refugee neighborhoods of Athens and Piraeus.
The eight volumes that will complete the series include 400 songs, left to us by both anonymous and known composers of the last two centuries, songs that could be characterized as traditional, folk, rebetiko, estudiantinas, cantadas, manes, light songs, etc.
In addition to the scores in European notation, chords and musical modes (makam) are also noted. For each song, there is as detailed information as possible about the origin, poetic and musical variations that are encountered both in recordings from the early last century and more recently.
The series is edited by George Konstantzos, from the Archive of Greek Music.
