The text of the performance playing this season (2023-2024) at the Karolos Koun Art Theatre, directed by Giannis Kalavrianos.
“Instead of creating sympathies, it is better to create interests.” The most famous work of the Nobel Prize-winning playwright Jacinto Benavente (Nobel Prize for Literature 1922), which is still performed today in Spain and many other countries.
Leandro and Crispin arrive in a large city. They have just managed to escape the justice of another city that is pursuing them for their illegal activities. The cunning Crispin, who has spent years condemned to the galleys (prison), is the main protagonist of this grotesque farce. He convinces Leandro to present himself as a wealthy lord while Crispin poses as his servant, allowing him to handle the situation as he wishes.
A fundamental principle of Crispin's worldview is that: “Instead of creating sympathies, it is better to create interests.” Thus, very soon, taking advantage of the circumstances, he manages to bind all the city’s inhabitants with interests that will force them to support the two broke con artists.
Leandro's love for Silvia, the wealthy daughter of Pulcinella and the most sought-after bride in the city, almost wrecks his plans; in the end, however, his cunning triumphs alongside the love of the couple.
