It contains beta-carotene, antioxidants, vitamins A, B, C, D and E, as well as fatty acids, primarily petroselinic acid. It helps moisturise and nourish the skin and is used to care for dry, stressed and mature skin.

Its deep red colour can be used as a natural colourant in soaps and other bath products. It is usually blended with base products at a concentration of 2–5%, as using it on its own may stain the skin. It is also used in cosmetic formulations such as moisturisers, after-sun products, lip balms and hair care products.
