A wonderful illustrated work featuring the flowers that were cultivated in the largest German garden of its era, the Hortus Eystettensis stands out for the variety of flowers it depicts. First published in 1613, the 367 copper engravings by Basilius Besler (1561–1629) capture the impressive variety of the princely gardens of Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1593/95–1612) in Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany. The careful illustrations are organized by seasons and, following the classification system used today, show plants belonging to a total of 90 families and covering 340 genera. This collection is considered one of the greatest treasures of botanical literature, described by the legendary botanist and zoologist Carl Linnaeus as an "unprecedented work." Besler's illustrated catalog survived long after the gardens' destruction in 1634 by invading Swedish armies.
