Description

The Crime of Charokopou or otherwise known as the Crime of the Century, as it is referred to in history, becomes the central axis of the play "Bad Mother-in-Law," inspired by the true story and the eponymous song by Iakovos Montanaris.

In early 1931, on the day of the Epiphany, sacks containing a dismembered body are found on the banks of the Kifisos River. The police investigation will indicate the main suspects as the victim's mother-in-law and his wife, while the victim's wife's cousin and the household maid will also be brought to trial as accomplices. Public opinion is shaken not only by the brutality of the crime but specifically by the fact that the main perpetrators are women. The harsh patriarchal society struggles to believe that a woman – even if she is a victim of long-term abuse, as was proven in the trial – is capable of such a horrific act.

The play attempts to highlight the extreme psychology of people who resort to violence after having themselves been victims of it. The horrifying crime disrupts the balances of Greek society, which feels that the core of the Greek family as well as the model of the amiable and obedient wife and mother-in-law is under attack. Justice is served both inside and outside the courtroom, with the crowd demanding exemplary punishment for the women who dared to cross the societal boundaries of their gender.
