Description

These "25 Lessons on Greek History" do not constitute a linear historical narrative. They emphasize, on one hand, the necessary historical periodization – the three historical phases of the history of the Greek nation and the distinction of the periods of modern Hellenism from 1204 to the present – while delving more deeply into the events of contemporary history, from the Revolution of 1821 to the present day. Recent historical events, after all, largely represent the evolution of older trends and the canvas on which the current political, social, and cultural reality is inscribed.

Seeking a solution to the existential deadlocks we are experiencing, I have come to the conclusion that this cannot be found unless there is at least a diagrammatic account of the historical course of Hellenism, as the uniqueness of the Greek nation is of a historical nature, meaning it can only face its own future if it has a deep awareness and knowledge of its historical journey and continuity. And although this holds true for all nations, for modern Greeks, it takes on decisive significance, given the existential crisis we have experienced since 1922: the formerly existing cultural, geographical, and demographic breadth has predominantly been replaced by historical depth.

However, acquiring a historical consciousness is not something simple or easy. Because this "marble head" of a long history is at risk of "exhausting our elbows." It risks leading us to inaction in the face of a history that seems burdensome for our small, narrow backs. That is why many get lost in the marshes of Marathon or in the fields of Gaugamela and Manzikert, unable to make the necessary historical distinction that characterizes a firm and balanced consciousness.
