Ryünosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) is one of Japan's foremost stylists - a modernist master of the literary short story, characterized by original images, cynicism, beauty, and dark humor. 'Rashömon' and 'In a Bamboo Grove' have inspired Kurosawa's magnificent film and depict a past where morality is upended.
