“I'll have whatever you allow me to have” - Nate

They found each other at the most inappropriate time in the most inappropriate place. They were born for each other, but fate decided otherwise…
Years later, he is called to become her protector when she is trying to move on with her life.
But how can you move on with a life in which your other half insists on staying far away from you?

I was right to be afraid of Yarros's romances all this time, because with mathematical certainty I can now say that they are simply… devastating!

Another book in which the author introduces us to a karmic couple and a story full of tears. Of course, woven into all of it is the element she knows best of all, the military! ?

Past and future alternate harmoniously from chapter to chapter, creating a bittersweet nostalgia that will crush you from the very first pages.
And if there is one thing I love most about Yarros, it is the way she builds her stories and characters, something I keep saying how much I appreciate in books.

In the last few days, this particular book kept me company, and being a fan of the Empyrean series, I was eager to read this romance by Yarros! The story follows Izzy, a law student and later a politician, and Nate, who enlists in the army and then in special forces to serve his country and get a second chance at life. They meet by chance in an airplane accident where Nate saves Izzy's life, and a strange yet deep friendship begins that evolves into love and lasts for a full 10 years, which we read about. They occasionally meet for years, but it's never the right time for something more, and eventually, an event freezes their relationship. Until Nate, who is serving in war-torn Afghanistan, is assigned to protect a group of politicians visiting for diplomatic reasons, and among them, he encounters Izzy! The author takes us back and forth between the present and the past, developing the characters, their passions, and experiences while narrating their love story! I admit I had never read a romance set in a war zone, and I honestly loved the book! I believe it takes a lot of skill to write a good romance while there is war, and Yarros certainly managed to convey it to us in a magical way! It is a second chance romance with bodyguard vibes that I personally adored! I highly recommend it for the new year!

Description & Specifications

Rebecca Yarros, the author of Fourth Wing, gifts us a sweeping romance about the irresistible power of the encounters that fate has in store.

When Izzy Astor boards the plane to return home, she isn’t expecting much. Everything indicates it will be an ordinary flight back from vacation: crowded, hectic, and stressful.

But then she sees the man sitting in the seat next to hers, who is anything but ordinary. Nate Phelan has dark hair, blue eyes, and a rugged charm that Izzy can’t resist. The attraction is undeniable. Izzy has never believed in destiny before, but now she can’t dispute its power.

Their lives change. They themselves change. Nate is building a career in the army, while Izzy begins to engage in politics. Although their few, occasional meetings in the following years draw them to each other like magnets, the moment never seems right for anything more.

Suddenly, however, they find themselves in Afghanistan, where Nate has been assigned to protect Izzy’s life.

He will do everything to keep her safe. And to win her heart.

This was not the Maldives. I closed my eyes and tilted my head back, toward the unbearably hot afternoon sun. With the breeze blowing, I could almost pretend that the moisture running down my neck and soaking my collar was water from a recent dip in the sea instead of my sweat. Almost. Instead, I was standing at the disembarkation area of Kabul airport, wondering how my boots weren’t melting and sticking to the concrete in such heat. Maybe the reason I hadn’t managed to take my trip was my karma, punishing me because I had decided to go without her. “I thought you were on leave,” said a familiar voice to my right. “I am. Can’t you see?” I opened one eye just enough to see Torres standing next to me, his camouflage hat shading his thick eyebrows.

“See what? You, in the airplane parking area with your head thrown back like you’re in a Coppertone commercial?” A smile formed on my lips. “This isn’t the airplane parking area. It’s a small bungalow over the water in the Maldives. Don’t you hear the waves?” The rhythmic hum of approaching turbines filled the air. “What I hear is that you’re losing your mind…” he muttered. “Looks like they’ve arrived.” I reluctantly opened my eyes and searched the horizon for an aircraft on final approach, spotting it within seconds. Here we go again. As much as I once loved the action that came with my profession, I had to admit I was starting to get old. Peace seemed much better to me than constant war.
