The present work records the causes, failures, structural and operational gaps, and the prevailing atmosphere in Israel before the onset of Hamas's operation "Al-Aqsa Flood" (October 7, 2023). Additionally, it contains exclusive information about what happened on the morning of Saturday within the Gaza Strip. A well-prepared operation that resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the hostage-taking of over 240 civilians and members of the Israeli Army and security forces.
The attack on October 7, 2023, could not have been realized with the specific results if Israel had not fallen prey to everything we document in this work. The leaders of Hamas in Gaza, who accurately "read" the structural weaknesses and failures of the Israeli intelligence, early warning, and deterrence system, could not even imagine the dimensions that the "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation would ultimately take.
All this happened ultimately because there was a combination of conditions, data, situations, circumstances, and random events that shaped the ground for the most severe attack on Israel's National Security since Yom Kippur (1973).
How has the Greek and Cypriot intelligence and early warning system approached what happened on October 7, 2023? Have they already started analyzing the operation to see if there are security gaps in Greece and Cyprus and in which areas? Has a prioritization of operational needs been made regarding the early warning mechanism, improvement of the intelligence cycle, sufficient staffing of posts and observation points, patrols, etc.? How well is Evros and the Green Line in Cyprus being protected? What gaps exist in the 24/7 monitoring and guarding of small islands and islets in the Eastern Aegean? Simple questions that are, however, part of the modern doctrine of warfare, regardless of whether the actors are state or non-state entities.
We hope that decision-makers in Greece and Cyprus will learn from Israel's ordeal and will promptly address security issues. We are faced not with the paramilitary Hamas but with the Turkish Armed Forces.
