The book "Sophocles Antigone" by I. Barba includes text according to the Oxford editions, scholarly translation, various comments, and an interpretative approach to form and content. This tragedy and "Oedipus Tyrannus" are considered the most important works of Sophocles.
The tragedy begins with the dialogue and conflict between the two sisters, Antigone and Ismene. After informing her sister, Antigone asks for her assistance. However, her plea goes unheard, and she departs in anger.
This is followed by the appearance of Creon and his conflict with Antigone, after she has already buried Polynices. Antigone rises to confront the egocentric Creon.
He respects no one. Neither the prophet Teiresias nor his son Haemon nor anyone else. Due to his selfishness, events lead to destruction. Antigone, her beloved Haemon, and Creon's wife die. The chorus and the audience mourn the tragic events. Creon is punished for the blindness of his passions. But why so much mourning?
Readers will closely observe the conflict of the characters. And they will learn.
