Egon Schiele (1890-1918), after freeing himself from the shadow of his mentor Gustav Klimt, managed in just ten years to carve his distinctive style into the history of modern art, before the Spanish flu claimed his life. As a child prodigy fully aware of his talent and as a passionate provocateur, it was not difficult for him to achieve this. His slender, exaggerated figures, drastic depiction of sexuality, and self-portraits displaying alluring but severely weakened expressions convey a harsh honesty that permanently unsettled and changed Viennese society. Despite the later denunciation of his works as "degenerate" and their temporary near-forgotten status, they influenced generations of artists, such as Francis Bacon and Tracey Emin. Today, his once misunderstood work continues to fetch high prices in the international art market. "Egon Schiele. The Complete Paintings 1909–1918" is presented in one volume capturing the intensity and emotional truth of his work, including 221 paintings and 146 drawings that reconstruct the fruitful last decade of his life. Many of the works have been re-photographed for this edition and are accompanied by excerpts from his extensive written work, as well as essays introducing his life and work, placing the Austrian master within the context of European expressionism and tracing his remarkable legacy.
