Hippos are beloved, hefty mammals famously known for their lounging in muddy pools. They are social herbivores, emerging after dusk to graze on grasses and plants, returning to water at sunrise. They have enormous mouths adapted for grazing, along with large, sharp canines and jaws capable of biting even crocodiles, small boats, and humans. The common hippopotamus, once found throughout Africa, is now mostly limited to Southern and Eastern Africa, while its close relative, the mysterious pygmy hippopotamus, is found only in the forests of Sierra Leone in West Africa. Hippos originated from Asia and share a common ancestry with whales. Until the last ice age, they were spotted across Europe, including Britain. The ancient civilizations of North Africa and the Middle East were familiar with the common hippopotamus, as it was still abundant along the Nile. For the Egyptians, it was revered as a divine being and simultaneously hunted for sport. The Romans introduced them to the theatres' arenas in Rome, while today, it is better to watch them in their natural habitat in Africa.
