A Modern Master

Robert E. McGinnis began his career in 1947 as an illustrator, and in 1956 he created his first covers for the magazines True Detective and Master Detective. In 1958, he painted his first cover for a paperback book, and from that day, his work was in high demand. The appearance of the "McGinnis Woman" - tall, smart, alluring, and mysterious - defined him as the top artist for crime novels. His work appeared on titles for Mike Shayne and the Perry Mason series, while he created 100 paintings for Carter Brown's adventures. McGinnis also became known for his work in other genres: espionage, romance, historical, gothic, and Western. His first major magazine assignments were for The Saturday Evening Post, and his work graced the pages of magazines such as Cosmopolitan, National Geographic, Good Housekeeping, Guideposts, and more. McGinnis's women often appeared in men's magazines of the '60s and '70s. His first movie poster was for Breakfast at Tiffany's, with an iconic depiction of Audrey Hepburn.

Almost immediately, his posters could be found everywhere - in theaters, on billboards, in newspapers, and even on soundtrack albums. His work for Hollywood included posters for James Bond, The Odd Couple, Woody Allen, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, and many others. Some of his most ambitious works were his gallery paintings, often depicting striking American landscapes, vast Western horizons, and, of course, beautiful women. The collection The Art of Robert E. McGinnis reveals the full range and beauty of the work of a true American master - whose legacy continues to this day.
