A theatrical "epic" in rhymed verse, a heroic comedy where laughter and tears unite, poetry, drama, and burlesque might also serve as an indirect "denunciation" of the dark Dreyfus Affair, which divided France at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century: racism, machinations of power, hypocrisy. The central hero is the most famous "big-nosed" character of all time, the renowned Cyrano, an anarchic and uncompromising poet and swordsman, played by the most brilliant actors—from José Ferrer to Gérard Depardieu.
The swan song of romanticism, the work Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand (first presented in 1897) was translated by Stratis Paschalis in 2007 without any cuts or adaptations, identical in meaning and form to the French original. In this edition, prompted by the performance at the Alkyonis Theater, a re-examination and update of that translation was carried out, which was shortened, partly adapted, and "modernized" in certain aspects. Nevertheless, for the most part, it was not differentiated, neither in the spirit nor in the letter of the original.
