Description

The goal of social stories is to share information about: the "when," the "where" a situation takes place, "who" is involved, "what" happens, and "why." (Marie Howley, Eileen Arnold 2005).

Experience in the field of special education has shown that social stories serve as an educational-therapeutic method to improve social skills in individuals with autism. They undoubtedly constitute a powerful tool that aids in managing change, preparing the child for new events and experiences, as well as teaching a new skill or a positive behavior.

Let's not forget that the goal of a social story is not behavioral change but understanding. We provide the information to the child (everything that most of us consider obvious), they understand it, and then they modify their behavior.

In conclusion, the social stories you will see on the pages of this book suggest solutions to problems that hinder children with autism, and teach how to resolve them. They are an important tool for educating these individuals in matters of education, social skills, and communication.

The purpose of the book is to help professionals in special education as well as parents manage the difficulties of children with ASD and other communication challenges, so they can better understand our world.

For the reasons I mentioned earlier, the meaning of the sentences that comprise the social stories has been partially visualized. Consciously, I used uppercase letters at the beginning of each story's title as a reminder for the child of the story being read each time. The structure of the stories followed the writing guidelines of Carol Gray and according to the recommendations of Catherine Faherty.
