This is the story of the 1st Airborne Light Regiment RA and its role in the Italian campaign as well as in the Battle of Arnhem. It is also the story of one of its soldiers: 14283058 Lance Bombardier Eric Wright Crystal, the father of the authors. Eric enlisted in the army in September 1942 and, after training, joined the newly formed regiment of airborne troops the following year. He first saw action in Italy in 1943, where he was severely injured. On 17 September 1944, two years to the day after he enlisted, he and the regiment landed by gliders near Arnhem in the Netherlands.
The authors place their father's experiences in context, describing the formation of the unit and the many months of training in England. Their involvement in the Italian campaign, where Eric served with E Troop, 3rd Battery, is later mentioned, with details of their actions in Rionero, Foggia, and Campobasso, where Eric was injured. It then describes the preparation and participation of the 1st Airborne Light Regiment in Operation Market (the airborne part of Operation Market-Garden). This highly detailed account of the battles highlights the regiment's critical (but often overlooked) role near the Arnhem bridge. There, after nine days of intense fighting, Eric was among the many who were captured and held until the end of the war. The inclusion of Eric's testimony adds a very personal touch to this outstanding account of the regiment's experience during the battles and life in captivity camps.
