Description

The definitive English edition of "The Father of Medicine." The second volume of the comprehensive Loeb Library edition contains valuable texts by Hippocrates, which provide essential information about medical practice in antiquity and Greek theories about the human body.

The first two authors, Prognostic and Regimen in Acute Diseases, are manuals aimed at how to predict the course and outcome of acute diseases and how to apply appropriate dietary methods, respectively. The Sacred Disease, Art, and Breaths are rhetorically embellished monographs, each supporting a specific thesis: that the sacred disease is a misunderstanding, that medicine is a legitimate art, and that air plays significant roles in life and health.

The Law outlines a new model of medical education, the Canon summarizes a public speech regarding the components of medical wisdom, and the Dentition has collected pediatric sayings dealing mainly with the feeding of infants and the alterations of the tonsils, texture, and throat.

This Loeb edition replaces the original by W. H. S. Jones. Available works in the Loeb edition of Hippocrates include:

Volume I: Ancient Medicine, Waters, Places, Epidemics 1 and 3, the Oath, Specifications, Regimen.

Volume II: Prognostic, Regimen in Acute Diseases, Sacred Disease, Art, Breaths, Law, Canon, Dentition.

Volume III: On Injuries of the Head, Surgery, Fractures, Joint, Mochlicon.

Volume IV: Nature of Man, Regimen in Health, Humours, Aphorisms, Regimen 1–3, Dreams.

Volume V: Affections, Diseases 1–2.
