The Gauls are a branch of the Celts, residing in the regions of Central and Western Europe, particularly in what is now Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Northern Italy, during the period from the 5th century B.C.

The Roman state entered into intensive military interaction with the Gauls/Celts for the first time in the 4th century B.C., and the Romans fought with them also in the 3rd century B.C. and during the Second Punic War (218-201 B.C.).

The conquest of Gaul was carried out by Julius Caesar in the years 58-51 B.C., where Caesar suffered a significant defeat by the Gallic commander Vercingetorix at Gergovia (52 B.C.) but retaliated at Alesia the same year.

During the 1st century B.C., the Gauls had very high-quality weapons, especially swords. The basic armament of a foot soldier included a sword, spear, and shield, while helmets or armor were used less frequently.
